“Now plead with God to be gracious to us. With such offerings from your hands, will he accept you?” -says the Lord Almighty, ‘Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased with you,” say the Lord Almighty, “and I will accept no offering from your hands.
Scripture: Malachi 1:6–14
When did we become so busy doing things for the world that we no longer have time for the one who created it? As a Registered nurse I worked a 12 hour shift. My job is physical and spiritual. I need to drink plenty of water, get rest and eat healthy meals. When I think of the creator who gave me a license to be a nurse; how could I drift away? Where could I go from your spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence?
There is something deeply concerning about the condition of the heart when we slowly drift away from God without even recognizing it. We don't always walk away from God overnight. Sometimes, it happens little by little. One missed prayer becomes several. One neglected moment in the Word becomes weeks. Our hunger for His presence begins to fade, and before we realize it, the things of this world have taken priority over the things of God. Busy working, busy making plans, building careers, chasing opportunities, attending activities, pleasing people, and trying to accomplish everything we believe needs to be done. Let’s ask ourselves: Am I busy doing what God has called me to do, or am I simply busy doing what the world expects of me? People have become comfortable giving God less than their best. We give the world our energy, our attention, our time, and our dedication. We give our careers our best hours, our responsibilities our greatest effort, and our personal ambitions our undivided attention. But when it comes to God, we offer Him whatever remains. A tired prayer. A rushed moment. A distracted worship. An occasional visit to His Word. We have time for everything except the One who gives us time. The greatest danger is that we can become so occupied with the things of God that we neglect God Himself. We can be involved in ministries, attend church, serve others, participate in activities, and even speak about God while our personal relationship with Him is slowly growing cold. Not everything that keeps us busy is something God has called us to do. Not every opportunity is an assignment from heaven. Not every open door is a door we are supposed to walk through. Sometimes we are running in so many directions that we have lost sight of the direction God intended for us. We must be careful not to confuse activity with obedience, or busyness with purpose. God never called us to become so consumed with the world that we have no room left.
In Malachi 1:6–14, God confronts His people because they have lost their reverence for Him. They had become comfortable with dishonoring the very God they claimed to worship. This passage challenges us to examine our own hearts. Have we become so familiar with God that we have forgotten to honor Him? Have our prayers become routine? Have we stopped making time for His presence? Are we giving Him our leftovers while giving the best of our time, energy, and attention to everything else?
Sometimes we do not realize how far we have drifted until we begin to recognize that our hunger for God's presence is no longer what it used to be. God is not simply looking for religious activities. He desires a heart that genuinely loves, honors, and reverences Him. The question is not simply whether we are going to church, but whether our hearts are truly surrendered to Him. Today, let us return to our first love. Let us not give God a divided heart, an occasional prayer, or whatever remains after everything else has taken our attention. God deserves more than our leftovers. He deserves our hearts. Perhaps today is the moment to pause, examine our lives, and ask ourselves: Have I been giving God my best, or have I slowly drifted away? The beautiful thing is that we can always respond to his invitation to draw near again. Let us return to him with sincerity, humility, and renewed devotion. Let’s pray!
Heavenly Father,
Today, I come before You with a humble heart. Lord, I recognize that somewhere along the way, I have allowed the distractions of this world to take my attention away from You. I have become busy with so many things, yet sometimes neglected the one who should always come first.
Forgive me, Lord, for the moments I have placed my responsibilities before your presence, my desires before your will, and the things of this world before the things of your Kingdom. Father, I don't want to become so familiar with the world that I slowly become a stranger to your presence. I don't want to know how to keep myself busy but forget how to sit at your feet. I don't want to be so occupied doing things that You never called me to do that I neglect the assignment you have placed before me. Lord, bring me back to you! Restore my hunger for your word. Restore my desire to pray. Restore the fire that once burned within me. Forgive me for becoming comfortable with a life that has slowly drifted away from your presence. Search my heart, Lord. Expose anything that has taken your place. Remove every distraction, every attachment, every desire, and every relationship that is pulling me away from You. Give me the courage to let go of anything that is keeping me from walking in obedience. Teach me to recognize when I am becoming spiritually distant. Don't allow me to become comfortable with lukewarmness. Don't allow me to mistake being busy in ministry for being intimate with You. I don't want to simply work for you; I want to walk with you. Father, I miss your presence. I miss the quiet moments with You. I miss the hunger to seek Your face, not just your blessings. I want you more than anything this world can offer. Today, I surrender again. Not just my words, but my heart. Not just my Sunday mornings, but my everyday life. Take me back to my first love, Lord. Let my heart beat for what makes your heart beat. Let my priorities reflect your Kingdom. May my life no longer be directed by the demands of this world but by the leading of Your Holy Spirit. Thank You because even when I wander, Your mercy calls me home. You are not a God who turns away a repentant heart. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
